On October 30, Russian regions held memorial events for the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions. 7x7 has compiled a list of these events.
In Kirov, residents laid flowers at the monument to victims of political repression. Mansur Magdeyev, the event organizer and son of an executed man, expressed outrage at authorities’ attempts to justify Joseph Stalin’s actions. This information was shared with 7x7 by activist Vadim Ananyin.
In Kazan, members and supporters of the Yabloko party read aloud the names of the deceased near a monument to the victims of Stalinist repression at Arkhangelskoye Cemetery.
In Novosibirsk, residents gathered for an authorized demonstration in memory of the repressed, though police prohibited them from displaying posters. A local activist held a solo protest with a sign reading, "Harmless Freethinking Should Not Lead to Prison or Grave."
In Magadan, an official commemoration took place at the Mask of Sorrow monument, with attendees reading names and laying flowers.
Residents of Ukhta also laid flowers at a local memorial for the repressed, while in Syktyvkar, residents honored doctors who suffered during the repression.
In Ryazan, activists from the local office of the Yabloko party and Alexey Frolov, editor-in-chief of Ryazan’s Novaya Gazeta, paid tribute to the victims of Stalinist terror.
Authorities in Vologda and Ulyanovsk declined to authorize memorial rallies for victims of repression this year. Tomsk City Hall prohibited a commemoration near the Stone of Sorrow in the city center, while Moscow City Hall also refused approval. Additionally, the website for the "Returning the Names" event was blocked in Russia.
