Twelve civilians were killed and another 121 were injured during the attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on Kursk Oblast, as reported by the region’s acting governor, Alexey Smirnov, during a meeting with Vladimir Putin on August 12.

According to Alexey Smirnov, the Ukrainian military now controls 28 localities in Kursk Oblast. The fate of nearly 2,000 residents in these areas remains unknown.

The evacuation of residents from Belovsky District began on August 12, following an attempted incursion by the Armed Forces of Ukraine the day before. The evacuation of residents from Glushkovsky, Rylsky, and Korenevsky districts had already started on Friday, August 9.

On the morning of August 6, Ukrainian forces breached the border in the Sudzhansky District of Kursk Oblast. They partially seized the district center, the town of Sudzha, and advanced into nearby localities. In response, the Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk regions introduced a counterterrorism operation regime. The Kursk Nuclear Power Plant might be one of the AFU’s targets, and its employees are preparing to shut down operating power units in case of a potential seizure.
