The Chairman of the Great Khural of Tuva, Kan-ool Davaa, declined to run for the new parliamentary term in the single-member district as a member of United Russia, instead passing this opportunity to a participant in the war with Ukraine, Syldys Shivit. Davaa announced his decision on his Telegram channel on May 30.
Last week, Kan-ool Davaa won United Russia’s primary elections in the Ulug-Khemsky single-member district No. 11, securing 7368 votes. His opponents, Syldys Shivit and Ayas Shaktar-ool, both participants in the war in Ukraine, came in 2nd and 3rd place, receiving 831 and 182 votes respectively.
"I consider it my duty to step aside in favor of our fighters and give them an opportunity to prove themselves. After all, as our state leader has rightly noted, they are the real elite of the country," wrote Davaa.
According to Syldys Shivit’s address on the primaries’ website, he commanded an assault squad of the Russian army in Ukraine. In February 2023, he lost his leg, returned to Tuva, and started working at the military enlistment office of Kyzyl.
Andrey Turchak, the Secretary of the United Russia’s General Council, claimed that 210 participants in the war in Ukraine were nominated in the primaries. Ninety-five of them were successful and will represent the party at the regional elections in the autumn.
