Human rights defenders secured compensation of 100,000 rubles for the family of an Irkutsk convict who spent six months dying of cancer and weighed just 35 kilograms. This was reported by lawyer Svyatoslav Khromenkov on October 14.

According to Svyatoslav Khromenkov, the Kuybyshevsky District Court ordered the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) to compensate the family of Anatoly Zubarev for moral damages due to inadequate medical care.

"It is beyond doubt that in his last months, Anatoly Zubarev suffered greatly. Had he received the necessary medical attention, he could have suffered less and spent more time with his loved ones," wrote Khromenkov.

Zubarev's wife, Elena, stated that her husband received no treatment while in the penal colony. The Zubarev family sought 1.5 million rubles in compensation from FSIN, with the prosecutor supporting their claim, but the court reduced the amount by 15 times.

In 2019, Anatoly Zubarev was sentenced to 12 years for rape. On November 24, 2022, the court released the 53-year-old from the penal colony due to his cancer diagnosis—a release his wife and human rights activists had fought for over six months.

A week later, on December 1, 2022, Anatoly Zubarev died at home. By that time, he weighed only 35 kilograms.
