The Public Assembly of the Komi Republic temporarily halted its activities for several reasons, including the lack of freedom of speech in Russia, according to the statement published on the movement’s Telegram channel on September 13.
"We can no longer openly and truthfully write about what’s happening in Komi, Russia, and the world as we used to. We can no longer openly stand up for our rights at rallies and pickets. Elections are increasingly becoming a farce, with murderers and rapists being declared 'heroes,'" reads the activists' statement.
The community shared news on solo pickets in Komi, reported on criminal cases brought against civil activists, and raised funds to cover fines for those persecuted by the Russian state.
The Public Assembly of the Komi Republic opposed the war in Ukraine and supported anti-war activists. In October 2023, the organization’s group on VKontakte was blocked.
