Semyon Sendersky, a deputy from Krasnoyarsk, proposed paying half a million rubles for births on Russia Day in a post on his social media page on September 11.
The Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) has recorded the lowest birth rate in Krasnoyarsk Krai in 25 years. Over the past six months, the number of deaths in the region has been 1.5 times higher than the number of births.
City Council Deputy Semyon Sendersky suggested offering a payment of 500,000 rubles to families who have a child on Russia Day, June 12. He believes the payout should be reserved for young families, although he did not specify an age limit.
Krasnoyarsk Krai isn't the only region aiming to boost birth rates. In Chelyabinsk, students will be awarded 1 million rubles for having a child. A similar law was adopted in Karelia. Local students who become mothers will receive payouts of 100,000 rubles. However, if the child is stillborn, the payment will be revoked.
