Deputies of the State Assembly of Mordovia adopted a law in its first reading that grants young women a payout of 100,000 rubles for early childbirth, the Parliament’s press office reported on October 31.

Women aged 25 or younger are eligible for this payout if it is their first child and they have lived in Mordovia for at least three years prior to childbirth.

7x7 has counted five other regions that have already introduced similar measures: Samara Oblast, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Karelia, Krasnoyarsk Krai, and Perm Krai.

Mordovia was also the first region to introduce fines for “encouraging abortions.” According to the republic’s head, Artyom Zdunov, the region is in the “red zone” in terms of birth rate.
